What inspired you to join Grand Rounds?

I first learned about Grand Rounds many years ago at a conference when Rusty Hofmann (co-founder) shared his son’s healthcare journey, which was his inspiration for starting Grand Rounds. I was in awe that a company was doing such incredible and important work.

My family and I had a similar healthcare experience with my sister, who is mentally disabled and lives in a group home. One day she had gotten really sick and needed to have surgery right away. However, the hospital she was admitted to didn’t have a qualified surgeon for this delicate procedure, and the hospital she needed to be transferred to didn’t have any beds available at the time. I happened to know some folks at the other hospital and gave them a call, at which point my sister’s entire care journey changed for the better. And then it struck me: it’s not fair that some have this access while many people in our country do not. I love that Grand Rounds’ mission is to make sure everyone has access to high-quality care, and I’m so honored to be part of this mission.

What are you most excited about in your new role?

There are many reasons I am excited about working here, but the primary reason is working with a great team to create the best, patient-centric health system for everyone, everywhere.

How did you get started in healthcare?

I’ve always had a passion for solving the biggest problems in healthcare. Healthcare is the most intimate thing in the world — it affects our family, our finances, and our overall health.

I started my career in employee benefits at The Travelers Insurance Company, followed by a 23-year tenure at UnitedHealth Group where I held various executive leadership positions, including the first-ever Chief Growth Officer for OptumRx.

If you could change one thing in healthcare today, what would it be?

There are so many things, but if I had to pick one it would be to eliminate variation in how care is provided across different populations.

What are you most passionate about outside of the office?

My family! I enjoy spending time with my family and some of my favorite times are watching movies with my wife and two children. I also love watching sports — football (go, Patriots!) and golf in particular are my favorite.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

Teleportation so that I could visit many more clients each day. And having a vaccine for COVID-19 readily available — that counts as a superpower, right?
