As of January 1, 2020, all members covered under the Quest Aetna medical plan are required to get a Included Health second opinion before moving forward with certain elective back, hip, knee, and shoulder surgeries. Members who do not will be charged a $1,000 surgery fee by Aetna.

Why is Quest Diagnostics requiring a second opinion for certain surgeries?
+
-

Included Health has found that certain surgeries and procedures have a higher rate of misdiagnosis and improper treatment. Because of this, if you are covered under Aetna, Quest is requiring that you work with Included Health before proceeding with certain spinal, hip, knee, and shoulder procedures so that one of the country’s experts can confirm you are on the best treatment path. If you do not complete an Expert Second Opinion with Included Health before surgery, Aetna will charge a $1,000 penalty.

Can Included Health still help me if I don't need these procedures?
+
-

Yes. In fact most people who use Included Health are not considering any of these procedures.

Am I required to follow the advice of Included Health?
+
-

You have no obligation to follow the recommendations provided by Included Health. To avoid the penalty, you must receive the Expert Opinion prior to having the surgery or procedure. You are not required follow the expert recommendation provided by Included Health. Your care decisions are between you and your provider, and ultimately the decision is yours.

What if it's an emergency?
